Apply to change your mode of study
If your research direction has changed, the programme is not what you expected or you need to move to a part-time arrangement you can apply to make a change. This might be by moving to an entirely different programme.
You will have to meet the entry requirements for the new award, and you will need to ensure that there is appropriate supervisory support available.
We recommend that you discuss your plans with your supervisor(s) and Doctoral Academy first. After discussion with the Doctoral Academy support team, you might find that a complete change of programme is not a suitable arrangement. If you do wish to change programme you can use our course and programme finder to look for a new one.
You may also wish to consider applying for a Change to Mode of Attendance. This allows you to change between part-time and full-time research. This may not be an option for all programmes, therefore, we recommend that you discuss all options with the Doctoral Academy.
Completing the form
Before completing the form, you should have:
- read the University’s Change of Circumstances for PGRs Policy;
- discussed your plans with your Doctoral Academy and your supervisor(s);
- discussed any implications on your visa status and any ATAS requirements with the Student Immigration Team (if you are an international student). We have further change to study guidance which we recommend you read closely. There are various implications for your student visa that you should consider;
- confirmed that your visa permits you to change your mode of attendance (if you are in the United Kingdom on a visa). You may also need to acquire an ATAS certificate for the new course (if required);
- identified the programme you wish to change to, and speak to the School that delivers it or supervisors in that research field;
- discussed the change with your funder/sponsor (if your studies are funded or sponsored). You should also check the terms and conditions of your agreement with the funder / sponsor as you may need to provide evidence that the funder/sponsor is willing to pay additional fees if necessary;
- obtained confirmation from your sponsor (if applicable) that they will continue to support you if you change your mode of attendance.
What you'll need to complete the form
We ask you to provide independent evidence, if possible, such as official letters, doctor's notes, certificates and statements to support your application.
Please note that for medical conditions, we do not require a specific letter from your GP or healthcare provider, and in cases of bereavement, we do not require a death certificate. However, you may include either of these to support your application if you are unable to provide any other form of evidence.
For a full breakdown of the evidence you might need, visit the Student Support website.
If you are registered with DASS and this relates to the reason for your change of study/mode of attendance, please let us know as you may not need to supply new evidence.
We need the evidence you provide to:
- be written in English, or translated to English by an official transcription service;
- relate to the time your circumstances changed.
Please note that falsification of information as part of this application may be a disciplinary matter and could lead to this request not being processed.
