Tuition fees
Tuition fees are charges payable to the University to cover the cost of your postgraduate research programme, including registration, tuition, supervision, examinations and graduation.
They are charged annually across each year of your degree and, depending on your funding source, will be charged either to you or your funding provider.
Understanding tuition fees
What tuition fees you pay will vary depending on your tuition fee status and which postgraduate research programme you are studying on.
Tuition fee status
This refers to the fact that fees are charged at different rates for 'Home’ and ‘Overseas’ students. It’s important to know which rate of fees you will be paying so that you can secure the appropriate funding. A student paying international fees, for example, would only have their tuition partly covered by a funding offering to pay tuition fees at the UK rate.
If you’re unsure, you can find out how to assess your tuition fee status.
Fees can vary by project
It's worth bearing in mind that some research opportunities incur a higher cost than others so it is best to check the tuition fees for your project on the relevant programme page to find out your exact costs.
If your degree involves variables such as an industry placement or work across split sites, this may also impact your tuition fees. You can explore the effect of these on your fees on our student support webpages.
Full time or part time?
Whether you engage in full-time or part-time study also impacts the cost of your tuition fees. Be sure to check the appropriate rate for your mode of study.

If you have secured funding that covers your tuition fees, you won’t have to pay anything directly to the University. However, if you are in receipt of non-University funding, you must provide evidence from your funding provider that the fees owed will be paid upon receipt of an invoice.
If you are self-funding, including if you are in receipt of a postgraduate doctoral loan or you have received a grant directly into your personal finances, you must pay your tuition fees before each deadline passes. You can find further information on making payments to the University on our website.
The University of Manchester does not charge research support fees (also known as ‘bench fees’). Your tuition fee will cover the full cost of running the project.
Scammers can target students under the guise of collecting tuition fees and loan repayments. Use our fraud awareness resources to learn how to protect yourself against scams, and who to contact to report suspicious activity.
