Introducing your postgraduate research supervisor
Choosing your supervisor is a key step on your journey to a PhD.
Your supervisor will play a vital role in shaping your academic and research experience, influencing your progress, and ultimately impacting your success. This is why it is so important to make the right decision on who will be your supervisor.
Your guide to choosing a supervisor
How to find a supervisor in 60 seconds
Your supervisor will not only guide your research but also serve as a mentor, advisor, and advocate throughout your PhD journey.
Finding the right fit is important, as a supportive and compatible supervisor can help make your experience rewarding and fulfilling.
If you’re applying for an advertised project then this process is simple as there will usually be a supervisor attached to that project.
If you’re proposing your own project, then you can find more information about potential supervisors by:
- Visiting the University's research explorer.
- Exploring research expertise on our website.
- Viewing the research area of department websites.
- Speaking to academics in your current department or university.
- Does their research expertise align with your research goals?
- Does their supervision style suit you? Some supervisors may have multiple students to supervise whereas in other cases, you may be their only PhD student.
- How often would you like to meet with your supervisor? At Manchester, you will have at least one meeting per month with your supervisor, although the frequency may vary depending on the needs of the project.
- What networks and development opportunities could this supervisor open up for you over the course of your PhD?
Once you’ve identified a potential supervisor, get in touch. You should contact them before you make an application.
This will allow you to make an initial introduction and for your potential supervisor to offer their support with submitting your application. They may also be able to advise you on potential funding sources.
You can contact as many potential supervisors as you want to, however do make sure your initial contact with them is tailored to them and their area of research.
Academics can receive many requests for PhD supervision. It’s vital that you make your first impression count.
An academic’s email address should be available via Research Explorer or department websites. If you are unable to find these details in either location, please contact our admissions team.
When contacting a potential supervisor for the first time, keep it clearly laid out and succinct. Your introductory email should include:
- A clear subject line – make sure it is clear what your email is about. Eg, Enquiry about potential PhD application.
- An introduction with information about your current level of study, academic background and any relevant experience.
- Your eligibility and enthusiasm for PhD study.
- If you already know how you will fund your PhD, or if you are interested in securing a University scholarship, you can include this information too.
- Summarise your interest in your chosen research area and how this aligns with the research of the academic you would like to supervise you.
If an academic is interested in supervising you from your initial email, they will get back in touch with you.
You may be invited to meet informally with a supervisor (in-person or virtually) after you’ve initially contacted them, or you may be advised to proceed straight to submitting a formal application.
After this, in order to give you an offer on a degree programme, you will need to attend a formal interview. Visit our interviews guide for more information.
